Action

Advocacy has been at the root of Mental Health America since Clifford Beers founded our organization in 1909. Through nearly a century of advocacy at the national, state and local levels, Mental Health America has sought to protect the rights of individuals with mental illnesses; to undo decades of neglect and substandard care; to seek access to equitable, accessible and culturally competent services; and to seek new funding and reinvestment in both infrastructure and services in the community.

Take Action Now!

Health care reform is one of the most pressing issues facing our nation.  But, the presidential candidates and the political parties have paid little attention to the importance of mental health and substance abuse as part of health reform efforts.  We cannot miss this opportunity.

Great news on Medicaid!  The House passed a supplemental funding bill (H.R. 2642) that would block harmful Medicaid regulation aimed at restricting rehabilitative, case management, and school-based services.  This compromise bill, negotiated by House leaders and the Administration, now goes to the Senate for its approval.

Also, with your help, Congress was persuaded to end discriminatory mental-health policy in Medicare by phasing out a 50% copay requirement on outpatient mental health treatment.
